Humanity at KFC
She knew all the sales lines they gave her.
Delivered them with a "you know I know you know" smile,
both of us with enough years we'd heard lots of lines,
been asked to say a few.
So I just grinned,
told her I'd counted every penny and had
exactly two dollars and ninety six cents
and if that new crunchy whatever thing was in my budget
well then I'd get some.
It was two forty one
so I did.
She laughed at the pennies,
asked if I got 'em
off the car floor. Yes. And also
the bottom of my purse.
We both laughed.
She gave me food for the day
plus
a bag of crunchy chicken strips.
