I've been cooking using actual recipes (to distinguish it from mudpies and things
you make in the kitchen when you're a littlekid that your mom isn't happy finding
out about) since Junior High, when my friend Lori and I met and discovered a mutual
love of baking. We started with cookies and branched out, as we gathered fruit
throughout the summer, into pies and fruit sauces and other delights. I remember one
recipe that was made twice; peanut butter milkshakes. Some things are so odd that
it takes two tries to decide they are Disgusting.
What I'm going to put on this page are recipes that I actually like and make,
at least from time to time. Plus I'll include a few family favorites, when I
come across the recipes.
This started out as a spot to put my Moussaka recipe. I developed my recipe
from four recipes, three from the internet and one in a cookbook, merging what I liked
about all of them and then modifying the result to my taste. It turned out nearly
exactly what I wanted, and I have a few ideas for how to tweek it further. But that's
how I cook... recipes are simply suggestions and I rarely follow one exactly. Following
four, inexactly, is about par for the course. So, the recipes:
- Moussaka This is a greek version, with lamb, and it's
so incredibly good that you will have to either serve a lot of other food with it or expect
that "serves 8" will really end up meaning "serves 4 and they'll lick the dish and stare at
you with those big puppydog eyes and you'll have to make more tomorrow". (03 Aug 06)
- Marinaded Greek Roast Lamb Leg This is lamb
heaven. Do try it. It's another thing you have to serve to guests. Note: 3 lb lamb leg sirloin
half would probably serve 4 people just fine. Adjust leg size accordingly. Or make two.
Leftover lamb is NOT a problem. (Jan 07)
- Yummy Veal Scallopini This is a very easy recipe
for veal scallops with marsala, mushrooms, artichokes, prosciutto, swiss, and some seasoned
spaghetti to go with it. It ends up tasting like something you'd buy at a good Italian
restaurant. And it's really easy to make. I said that twice now! (28 Dec 07)
- Greek Shepherd's Pie This is another easy recipe.
It's a shepherd's pie with lamb and greek seasonings. Kind of like a very fast
moussaka substitute. With only two layers, potatoes, and no eggplant or white sauce. Ok,
not like moussaka. But it's got ground lamb and is really good. (30 Dec 07)
- Pork Pot Roast This recipe takes maybe 20 min to get into the oven.
It's got apples and sweet potatoes and is one of those comfort food things.
It's great for the end of apple season, when it's gotten cold and you want something
hearty and don't mind heating the kitchen up. (Nov 08... an election pork dish. Hmm.)
- Dark Rye Bread This was one of those things
I made because it was snowing and I was at Jay's and wanted to DO something and didn't have much there to do and needed to be creative and... at times like that, bread happens. (4 Jan 09)
- Black Bean Salsa Salad This was really delicious and very easy. It is mostly shopping and chopping. Well worth the effort. (28 May 09)
- Pumpkin Seed Date Sourdough Bread This was a "no recipe" invent as you go along bread that turned out fantastic. (26 August 09)
- Stovetop Turkey Thighs This was a put-together dish that was so good I want to remember how it went. (1 July 10)
- A Chicken In Every Pot This is another Daily Cooking recipe that I want to remember what I did for so I can do it again. (24 January 11)
- Rice Gone Wild! I made this for a potluck and it was yummy. (22 March 13)
- Black Sea Bass and Veggies I made this today for lunch and it got "this is one of the best fish dishes you've made" from hubby. :-) (17 November 13)
