Myco Geeks These are sites that real Mycologists find exciting (hence MycoGeek... I mean that in a good way!). |
Here is a new site by Eileen Seto from Ontario, Canada. There are 22 (she promises that there will be more as time permits) beautiful photographs of pictures here that were taken in Canada. The primary web page has thumbnails of each photo and the full photograph includes the scientific name, date found, location and a paragraph about the find. Excellent new site! . Added 6/16/96.
This is an introductory site to mycology sponsored by The Ohio State University. It is an excellent introduction with lots of color diagrams.
There are many sites that aren't in the Top Sites category that deserve to be here but aren't because I haven't had time to visit their web sites yet. I have also split out the sites pertaining to topics such as slime molds into their own category, MycoGeeks. Some of these sites are certainly awesome if your specialty happens to fall into one of these areas.

This is the site of all sites when it comes to mycological resources on the World Wide Web. There is everything from links of special interest to professional mycologists to links for amateurs. This page is maintained by Kathie Hodge at Cornell University. The information is very accessible by not only being broken out into separate categories, but also by having a primary index page of all sites. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 6/16/96
I had lost track of this site some time ago because it had moved... well, I found it again! This newsgroup is an awesome site with postings for both professional and amatuer mycologists alike. Added: 6/16/96; Last verified: 6/16/96
What a cool name. What a cool site! If you are looking for mushroom cultivation equipment of any type, you have found the perfecti (ha ha) site. This site is very complete and is definitely one of the top sites available on mushrooms. As they mention on their home page though, if you are surfing this site with a 14.4 or lower baud rate modem, you might want to disable images (bummer, because the pictures are truly awesome). In addition to tons (probably literally) of growing supplies and pictures that are one of a kind (some were taken for Paul Stamets new book), they have pages on Mycomedicinal and dried mushroom products, a list of mushroom cultivation seminars by them, and some information on Psilocybes. Added: 10/1/95; Last verified: 5/18/96
If you are looking at growing wild mushrooms, check this out. Although it is specifically targeting magic mushrooms, the techniques used here should be valid for many different types of mushrooms. This is not a text only document: we have pictures, we have diagrams, we have a very impressive work. Keep in mind that growing magic mushrooms is currently against the law and the posting of this site is purely for the informational content pertaining to growing wild mushrooms (there, I said it again). Added: 10/1/95; Last verified: 5/18/96
This site has some magic fungal ties somewhere (ethnopharmacology), but regardless, you need to see it anyway. I felt like I'd entered another dimension. I didn't have much time to explore when I stopped in, but I'm definitely going back. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
Another newsletter article turned updated resource. I'll try to keep this resource as current as possible. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96

MycoInfo is now available as a web page! The link above will now take you directly to his new web page. The following is the link to see the original gopher site. This is an extremely impressive mycological newsletter by Brian McNett that has been online for some time now (1993-- a real old-timer to the world of the Net!). In addition to the most recent issue, there are several years of back issues here. You definitely need to visit this site. You can request the receipt of MycoInfo directly by eMailing Brian at bmcnett@linknet.kitsap.lib.wa.us. Added: 10/1/95; Last verified: 5/18/96
In addition to being the home page of Igor Malcevski, this is also home of the newsletter of the Snohomish County Mycological Society, the Mushroomer. He has several issues on line. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This is an awesome site with lots of graphics and mushroom articles of general interest. It appears that Wayne has one of the earliest (I'm told that Michael Stein's EcoNet was the earliest) general purpose mushroom web sites (and certainly one of the best)... a true pioneer in digital mycology! You can't afford to miss this site if your interest is mushrooms. Added: 10/1/95; Last verified: 5/18/96
Wes Stone from Portland, Oregon (my old stomping grounds until my move to New Hampshire two years ago) has detailed accounts of his mushroom foraging experiences. This site has been worked on quite extensively over the last few months. He also includes accounts of his edible excursions with wild berries and fish. Belch! (only meant in the good sense of the word). Added: 11/1/95; Last verified: 5/18/96
Here is a new web page that is a must see for any mushroom foragers. These pages are maintained by Ralph Czerepinski and are very impressive! Ralph has included some beautiful mushroom pictures (with many more to come) and lots of original work. Currently included are book reviews, mushroom picking safety rules (pay attention to this one), favorite mushrooms and mushroom links. Added: 2/11/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This is another super site that contains descriptions of many of the common edible and poisonous mushrooms of Slovenia, mushroom receipes, and other items of general interest. If you've ever laid awake in bed at night wondering what the common name of Amanita phalloides was in Slovenian, you need lie awake no longer...
Another must see. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
Contained here are lists of mushrooms genus's; individual mushroom descriptions that include page references in popular (and not so popular) references, and much more to be added in time. All of the lists and descriptions in this area have been automatically generated from a computer database that houses thousands of mushrooms descriptions and reference links. The link above will take you to the description page of this project, or you can go directly to the Genus list, an Amanita muscaria description, or a Clitocybe nuda description. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
What started out as an article for a newsletter some years ago will now be a regularly updated list of mushrooms on postage stamps. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This is a research page from the University of California Berkeley looking at the evolution of Basidiomycetes. Because of the nature of the research, this site is listed in the Mycologically Geeky sites. However, there is a lot of information here that the everyday amateur mycologist will find of interest here, including some great pictures. The web pages are very nicely laid out. Added: 10/1/95; Last verified: 5/18/96
There are some truly beautiful mushroom pictures contained here. This is also a very pleasing web site to look at. A definite must see. I need to take a longer visit here at some point. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This site appears to be relatively new (kinda like mine), but is a definite must see.
Tom Volk is a Research Mycologist at the Center for Forest Mycology Research, Forest Products Lab in Madison, Wisconsin. He did his Ph.D. dissertation on the life cycle of the genus Morchella. If he did as well with his dissertation as he did on the Morel hunt of which the bounty is pictured on his web page, he would of passed with flying colors. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This page is an offshoot of Tom Volk's Fungi web site, and contains work that he and another mycologist has done on the genus Armillaria. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This site gives a basic introduction to the world of fungi. This also has links to other biological and botanical resources. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
A site from Michael Wood, a past president of the Mycological Socity of San Francisco. There are many interesting articles here, from mushroom receipes that had been originally printed in the Mycena News newsletter, to upcoming mushroom events around the globe. It appears that Michael updates this site often, so check it periodically for the latest and greatest. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This is a page by Thomas Beutel that covers Mushrooms in his neck of the woods (or city as it were). I need to revisit this site to see exactly what is contained here. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
Around 800 mushroom pictures can be found at this gopher site. I haven't tried to look at any of the pictures available here yet. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
This is a great site for some awesome mushroom pictures. The author of this site, Nathan Wilson eMail at nathan@d2.com, is seeking help in finding a site to carry more of his mushroom pictures since he states that he is currently approaching his 5Mb limit. Sounds like a great cause to me. Added: 1/1/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
Pictures of twelve different mushrooms found at Point Reyes. Added: 12/4/95; Last verified: 5/18/96
This is a site that contains a listing of the mushrooms found in Hawaii. It is a project funded by the National Science Foundation and also includes some neat pictures (the pictures are best viewed in 16- or 24-bit color). Added: 5/18/96; Last verified: 5/18/96
